“We were looking for flexible, intuitive software that would increase our productivity and streamline the execution of our lab work. This is critical to our ability to develop and sell our products. Plus we wanted a platform that would enable us to get more value from our data and put us in a position to do advanced analytics and run AI in the future. We felt confident that we could achieve these objectives with Alchemy.”— Donald Lawson, Technical Development Chemist
AGC Chemicals Americas is a global subsidiary of AGC Inc. in Japan, a multi-billion dollar corporation and one of the world's largest manufacturers of glass, electronics displays, performance chemicals, life science and ceramics.AGCCA offers the world's broadest range of high performance fluorochemical material science solutions, including fluoropolymer resins, custom compounds, fluoroelastomers and specialty materials.
In 2023 AGCCA began a search process to evaluate ELN+LIMS for its industrial coatings group.
They reviewed options from several perspectives. First, they needed flexibility in the form of options to use functionality that came turnkey and as well as to be able to quickly tailor the software to their needs from raw materials additions to the order of addition, dispersion method, application method and associated processing steps.
Second, they needed an intuitive user interface. This was considered very important to drive time to value. They wanted to be able to bring new people on quickly, get them trained, able to easily retrieve information, identify the best starting point formulations, and easily manipulate and modify existing formulations.
Third, they sought deeper scientific expertise. They needed a partner that could support various testing methods analyses and associated calculations embedded in their formulating tables and analytical tools.
Finally, they needed a solution that could integrate with a variety of laboratory equipment that included analytical and physical measurement instruments. This would help them achieve their goal of having a single source of truth for all their technical data as the basis for materials informatics in the future.
After a 2-week free sandbox, it was clear that Alchemy could address the superset of AGCCA’s needs.
Their staff could see how their raw materials, formulations, test data and a variety of important calculations could be rendered in Alchemy such that project execution could be completely digitalized and streamlined. During the sandbox, Alchemy produced a variety of alternative configuration approaches in real-time to enable AGCCA to visualize and even use alternatives before roll out.
In less than 7 months, AGCCA was able to run their vendor selection process, run a sandbox, commercialize a relationship, deploy the solution and train its staff and start realizing benefits of collaborating in a single, integrated ELN and LIMS.
